Wicker PavilionDidzis Jaunzems (LV)

Wicker Pavilion is a place to relax and meditate in the heart of the Jardins de L’Europe. Combining contemporary design and traditional materials, it is in harmony with the natural landscape and provides a shaded, peaceful haven in which to enjoy a bit of fresh air.
A Latvian architect and set designer, Didzis Jaunzems has designed a checkered wooden structure covered with 259 traditional wicker cones. The pavilion’s openings function as windows onto the nature surrounding it, creating harmony between the sheltered space and the outside. Daylight is filtered and subdued so your eyes and your mind are free to wander.

Born in 1987, Latvian architect and set designer Didzis Jaunzems lives and works in Riga (Latvia). He has studied and gained practical experience in architecture and urban planning in Europe and has attended workshops and participated in competitions in India and Asia. In 2012 he found the DJA architectural studio, where he works on landscape design projects and artistic installations and designs opera sets. He received the Latvian Architecture Award in 2013, 2015, and 2017, and the Latvian Landscape Award in 2019.
